DPM Exchange Protection Error 31008

Issue: Unable to add an Exchange server to a DPM protection group.

You receive an error after trying to add an Exchange server to a DPM protection group (image below).  The error states “This item cannot be protected because some prerequisite software is missing.”

Solution:

The eseutil.exe, ese.dll, and chksgfiles.dll version that are installed on the most recent edition of Exchange Server must be the same version installed on the DPM server.  The files should be installed in the bin directory of the DPM folder.   The default location is “%programfiles%\Microsoft DPM\DPM\bin”.
